Randolph Senior, Matthew Estopinal was awarded the prestigious Bryant-Jordan Scholar Athlete Award for all of Class 4A, District 8. Matthew will receive a $2,500 scholarship for the region award and is a candidate to win the entire Class 4A division later this spring in Birmingham. The 33rd Annual Bryant-Jordan Awards Banquet and Ceremony at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel Ballroom will be held April 9. This is the third year in a row Randolph has had at least one Region winner.
As team captain, Matthew finished off the 2017 cross country season with a school record 15:52.10 while pacing the field to win a Huntsville Metro (5K) Cross Country Championship. He finished runner up at the AHSAA 4A State Cross Country Championships on November 11th.
Matthew had an unbelievable 2017-18 indoor track & field season, lowering the school record and setting a new 4A-5A state AHSAA meet records in the 3200 meter and 1600 meter in 9:22.01 and 4:21.50 respectively, while also winning those events to take the individual state championship titles. Matthew’s 9:22.01, as of February 3rd, 2018 ranks him #7 in the whole United States for the 3200 meter event.
Matthew is also an honor student, with a GPA 4.15 unweighted, 4.60 weighted. He also scored a perfect 36 on his ACT.
